Sugi guitars and basses are designed and built with the working stage musicians in mind. From the shape of the body to the balance of the instruments ; from the shape of the neck to the clean clear output of the pickups, we have drawn on our 40 years of design experience working with the most famous brands of guitars and the super stars of music to bring it all together in Sugi guitars and Basses.
This wood is still shrouded in mystery to some. We are proud to have been industry pioneers in the application of this fantastic wood for instrument building. Its advantages are scientifically verifiable. More importantly, we have found its effects on the instrument are obvious to the musician when compared and tested. Sugi guitars uses this rarest of woods in the necks of its detachable DS models exclusively, as well as laminated in our NB bass necks with other woods. Having been involved in the design and "bringing to market" of a number of bridge systems over the years for some of the popular industry leaders, we were happy to have a long good relationship with the Gotoh Company. When combined with a steel block spring anchor at our request, we feel their bridge offers the best in sound, playability and cost performance for those wanting this common feature. You don't see it and may never need to access it, but the adjustable truss rod is an important feature that insures your guitar a long life precise playability. All Sugi Instruments are made with our own design Stainless Steel double-acting, double rod, designed to our demanding requirements, At Sugi guitars we DON'T use off the shelf pickups! Again, from our years working with the major names in guitars, we have developed the ability to design, and the relationships to have quality pickups built to our specifications by a leading industry maker. This is one feature that very few the industry giants can gain access to. It gives us great freedom of design, and the ability to produce instruments tailored to the sound we are seeking.
Sugi Guitars are made by hand. we don't employ CNC machines in our work. Most of us at Sugi have recently left the corporate, mass production world of guitar making. Our purpose for building Sugi Guitars is to exercise the handcrafting talents that we possess, and the industry leaders we worked for could never fully use. We enjoy the ability to appreciate each and every instrument. At the same time we employ accurate and cost effective construction techniques that benefit the musician with a quality guitar that they can afford. Whether the guitar is a detachable or set neck design, the craftsmanship executed in mounting the neck to the body is critical to the performance of the instrument. A loose cavity on a detachable neck guitar will effect the tone and playability. A less than perfect job of mounting the neck on a set neck design will rob the guitar of the subtle tonal nuances you should expect of a master crafted instrument. We understand these points and pay special attention to this critical step. Our SH series set neck guitars and special order DS bolt on neck guitars employ the use of hollow chamber routs to enhance the richness and overall tone quality as well as add to the great sustain on those string bends that just go on forever. You may not see this, but you will surely hear it. On all the Sugi guitars and basses the fret edges are shaped and polished for ultimate comfort and playability.
